Aragonite or aragonite is one of the crystalline forms of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3), together with the calcite. It can be found in the form of stalactites, and also in almost all mollusk shell and coral skeleton. Aragonite varieties include the so-called flos-ferri (iron flower), which resembles a beautiful coral.
The pair aragonite/calcite was the first case of recognized mineral polymorphism. This means that both have identical chemical composition, but different crystal structure. Because of this difference, the aragonite is more soluble in water than the calcite and unstable at ambient temperature and pressure. In fact, for geological periods of time (from 10 million to 100 million years), aragonite tends to transform into calcite. This last property can be used to determine the age of certain rock formations.
Aragonite also belongs to an isomorphic series, that is, a group of minerals that belong to the same class and have the same crystal structure, but whose composition is different. Aragonite contains isomorphic substitution of barium (witherite), lead (cerussite), zinc (bromlita) or strontium (Leblanc). These minerals form the aragonite group.
